Title label partly rubbed away. Corners bumped and edges heavily rubbed. Hinges starting, but binding still fairly firm. Top edge gilt is soiled. Frontispiece intact. Gift card pasted on front endpaper has an inscription in verse to the young Herbert Marc Davidson, later to become a newspaper publisher in Florida. It reads: "When you, dear Marc, grow up, perhaps you may go to the S of J (School of Journalism?); Or, even if you don't, you still may be a journalist, like me; If so, 'twill smooth your pathway from the start, This book to learn by heart. So read it well -- within its cover lies Much that will make you wise. Though you may never know the on who sent it, Her fondest wishes always will frequent it." (dated September 1926).
