An account of an 1846 trip from St. Louis into the Western frontier A preliminary page gives the author's disclaimer that he has described Indians as he has found them in their "primitive state." He cautions against romanticizing Indians. He closes by saying "The Indian is certainly entitled to a high rank among savages, but his good qualities are not those of an Uncas or an Outalissi."
