Luchow's German Cookbook

By: Mitchell, Jan

Price: $9.00

Quantity: 1 available

Orange cloth lightly soiled at edges, shield logo somewhat faded. Jacket heavily chipped and repaired with cellophane tape. Gift inscription and seller's stamping on title page. Text clean. Not only a collection of scores of Old World recipes from this famous German restaurant that formerly operated in lower Manhattan but also an introduction to the establishment's century-old history, folklore and atmosphere. Thurber-like cartoons add to the charm. (Sadly, the restaurant is now defunct and its original building was destroyed by fire in in 1992.) Author is a Swede who took over Luchow's for a time in the 1940s and 50s. He claims the book is the "first collection of authentic and purely German dishes to be published in America." Most of the recipes are labeled both in English and German. Designed for cooks with at least some experience in the kitchen but not at the chef level.
