1 Deutsch Sudwest Afrika / Vorlaufige Ausgabe / Blatt12. /Grootfontein
Berlin Abteilung Der Landesaufnahme 1910 Very Good Map 23.5 In Wide By 29 in. Tall
-Antique map, dated 1910, showing 1 section of a 9-section series of folding topographical maps for German Southwest Africa (later transferred to Britain and now an independent state known as Namibia). Very good condition overall. Place names and map key in German. Consists of 15 separate panels, each 4.75 by 9.5 inches, glued to heavy linen (or possibly canvas?), meant for folding and easy transport. A couple of panels have loose corners, and there are a few loose threads. Most remain firmly attached. Rear side of one panel is age-darkened (likely the panel that was most exposed to light.) This panel also has a handwritten label glued to the linen, plus an oval seal, similar to a postmark. Scale 1:400,000. Shows the town of Grootfontein, and nearby farming estates. Areas shown include Kalk Plateau, Owangowa Veld, and Hoch Plateau, all parts of a larger area labeled Omahe. Political subdivisions that are labeled include Bexirksamt Grootfontein; Districksamt Gobabis and Bexirksamt Waterberg (with a question mark.). Mostly black and white but with pastel shading of brown and blue to indicate rivers, lakes and hills. A label on left edge reads, in English, "South West African Company." A word and 2 arrows are lightly pencilled in script on left edge; no other markings.
