9 Bernstein, Leonard Leonard Bernstein at Harvard -- "The Unanswered Question" (The 1973 Norton Lectures Presented on a Total of 17 LP Vinyl Records in Six Boxed Sets"
NY Columbia Records 1974 Near Fine Good Stereo Vinyl Record Albums 33 LP
A total of 17 vinyl records (33 RPM) arranged in 6 boxed sets, that present Leonard Bernstein's seminal Norton Lectures at Harvard in 1973. These vintage Columbia Records sets are each marked "Demonstration -- Not for Sale." The cardboard boxes show moderate wear with bumped corners and scuffing, but the records themselves are in fine white sleeves and show no visible scratches. They probably have been played a few times but mostly have been undisturbed in storage for years. In these musicology lectures, (presented later on public television), Bernstein builds on the linguistic work of Noam Chomsky to argue there's a worldwide, cross cultural musical grammar. He starts with a hypothetical protohuman infant in prehistory, who learns to combine "mmm" sounds with "aah" sounds to produce the first song of "Ma!" Over millions of years, humankind gradually developed musical scale systems, eventually leading in the 20th century to a struggle between classical tonal music and new atonal forms. Besides lecturing to a small group of students, Bernstein uses the piano and his own attempts to sing to demonstrate some of his concepts. He also conducts the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony and the Harvard Glee Club to provide other examples. Here is a further technical summary and commentary from Joe McLellan. "Bernstein traces the development of music from its origins to the 20th-century struggle between tonality (championed notably by Stravinsky) and atonalism (represented mainly by Schoenberg). The last two talks, devoted to these composers, are particularly enlightening, but all six are outstanding. He argues persuasively that humans are born with an ability to grasp musical forms, and that rules of musical syntax are rooted in nature--in mathematically measurable relations between tones and overtones... These talks are a key document. They coincide chronologically, as cause and/or symptom, with the movement of America's leading composers back from Schoenbergian forms toward a tonal orientation. Bernstein predicts and promotes this movement, which is still in progress. He is clearly an advocate of tonality, but he discusses atonal music with sympathy and understanding." Among the many longer works included in these lectures are: Set 1, Mozart Symphony No. 40; Set 3, Beethoven Symphony No. 6; Set 4, Berlioz, Ball scene, "Romeo and Juliet;" Wagner, Prelude and Love-Death, "Tristan and Isolde;" Debussy, Prelude, "Afternoon of a Faun," Set 5, Ravel, Feria, "Rapsodie Espagnole;" Mahler, Adagio, Symphony No. 9; Ives, "The Unanswered Question." Set 6, Stravinksy, Oedipus Rex. These sets will require extra postage for secure shipping.

18 Daytona Beach International Festival "Face the Music" Promotional Folder for Spring 2009 Concerts
Daytona Beach DBIF 2009 Single Page Flyer Good+ 28 In. Tall By 9.5 In Wide
A direct-mail leaflet announcing more than 20 cultural events in the Daytona Beach area, including six concerts by the London Symphony Orchestra, during the period of April 16 to May 2, 2009. Within the folder is a smaller ticket-order form. Lightly rippled. The marketing theme "Face the Music" became ironic because this festival turned out to be the LSO's last biannual visit to Daytona Beach, a tradition that began in 1985. The visits were heavily subsidized by the Daytona Beach News-Journal over the years, but a federal judge halted the funding after Cox Newspapers, co-owner of the newspaper, successfully sued Herbert M. "Tippen" Davidson Jr., publisher and majority owner, for "wasting" the newspaper's profits on arts projects. Attempts to obtain replacement grants failed, and an LSO visit planned for 2010 was cancelled.
