15 Cole, Julie; Allaback, and Stewart, Laura Orlando's Leu House
Orlando Harry P. Leu Gardens 1995 1st Edition Stated Trade Papeback Near Fine No Jacket 4to -- 11in Tall
113 pp. on glossy paper. Nearly new, small stray reddish mark on rear cover, and lightly thumbed, else perfect. Numerous historical b&w photos on nearly every page. Although the title suggests this is a guide to a mansion, this scarce work actually is much more -- an overview of the earliest decades of Orlando history, its pioneer families, early industries, landmark buildings, social patterns, etc. About a quarter of the book centers on the Leu House and its gardens, and the Leu family. The property is now a city museum, although donor Harry Leu in the 1960s had doubts about whether the city would manage it competently. This book project started in 1987 with interviews and notes compiled by Allaback, and expanded in 1991 with additional social history added by arts writer Laura Stewart and editing by estate curator Julie Cole and editor Joy Dickinson.
