No writing or markings. Firm. A lively biography of the short-lived Crane, novelist and war correspondent known for his American classic "Red Badge of Courage." (which some readers view as an anti-war statement and others regard as an affirmation of bravery). Crane lived with the madam of a brothel and befriended Henry James and others after settling in London. He died at 28 from tuberculosis.

Fadiman also provides context for the authors and shows why their work is still considered important long after their deaths. His overview, written in short, pithy sentences, spans from Homer to moderns such as Aldous Huxley, Ernest Hemingway and Robert Frost. Valuable for helping a reader to select a few "important" books to supplement the mind candy of detective yarns, romances, political exposes and self-improvement manuals.
