4 Gannett, Guy P., Et. Al. Music in Her Sphere: A Biography of Anne Macomber Gannett
Portland, Maine Guy Gannett Publishing 1953 First Edition Cloth Very Good No Jacket 8vo
90 pp. Moderate rubbing on spine and corners, Text clean, no markings. With presentation card signed by the daughter of Anne Gannett laid in. Frontispiece portrait of Mrs. Gannett, with tissue protector intact. Foreword is by Guy Gannett, her husband, but the main text is by an unidentified person described only as a "young woman" who did not know Mrs. Gannett personally, presumably a staff writer at one of the Guy Gannett newspapers in Maine who, oddly, did not receive a byline or acknowledgement in this volume. The book is a memorial tribute, chronicling her involvement in women's suffrage, Republican politics, support of classical music, leadership of the National Federation of Music Clubs, and other charitable endeavors. There are a few personal passages about her relationship with her husband, but not much about her role as a mother. An interesting glimpse inside the Maine establishment and one of its more energetic grande dames.

6 Shannon, Prof. T.W. Know Thyself or Nature's Secrets Revealed; Scientific Knowledge of The Laws of Sex Life and Heredity
Marietta Ohio S.A. Mullikin Co. 1920 Later Printing Leatherette-type Cloth Very Good No Jacket 8vo -- 8 in.
584 pp. pebbled black leatherette with faded gilt title. Spine rubbed, corners bumped. Front endpapers partly split, but binding is firm. Many b&w photos, plus color illustration of "The Guardian Angel" as frontispiece. Subtitle excerpt: "Vital Information for the Married and Marriageable of All Ages..." Text clean, title page has light newsprint shadow at edges. A quaint and curious blend of marriage manual, etiquette guide and first-aid book, with recipes for various home remedies, all presented through the lens of puritanism of the early 1900s. Much of the book is devoted to a call for restraining sexual urges and confining them to marriage. Self-pollution (masturbation) is greatly frowned upon, as is "spooning" and consorting with prostitutes. A useful and rather hilarious reference book for getting a feeling for idealized American morality after World War 1. The spine displays the title as "The Science of Human Life" while the front cover simply states "Know Thyself."
