Davison Jr., deceased) Dated Daytona Beach, 16 Feb. 1978, it reads: "To Tip Davidson, It's a great pleasure for me to see this lovely book again. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. But the real joy is in the Hokusai. Aloha, James A. Michener." A collection of 187 full-page color plates (gray, peach and black colors) based on Hokusai's outpouring of wood-block illustrations from 1814 to 1878. Red-colored end papers A. 48-page introductory essay by Michener, and further critiques and detailed captions throughout the book. A treasure for collectors of Hokusai and Michener.

456 pp. Two to three inch slits along front and rear grooves of spine, plus rubbed edges and corners. Blue cloth on spine is sunned, Front endpapers have tan shadows from a 1945 NY Times review taped in. Rear endpaper has a dj blurb about the author pasted in, but no shadowing. Front end paper has the author's signed initials and personal inscription to Liliane and Herbert Davidson (Florida newspaper publishers), "who have watched my child grow, as I have watched theirs" (dated 20th May 1945) Lacks dust jacket. Tale of Beatrice Rivers, who marries a rich English squire to escape a dreadful home, and later becomes active in charitable work in Cornwall. No. 3 in Ethel Voynich's series about The Gadfly, a bitter man who gets caught up in Italy's Risorgimento movement of 1947.
