1 Daytona Beach News-Journal Center Stage
Daytona Beach, Florida Daytona Beach News-Journal 2006 First Edition Magazine Very Good No Jacket Souvenir Program
47 pp. on glossy stock. A full-color special section of the Daytona Beach News-Journal to mark the opening of The News-Journal Center, a $29 million performing arts building, in July 2006. Light wear, no markings. Many color photos, plus advertisements by Daytona's major companies and institutions. The publication marked the zenith of the civic influence and power of the Davidson family, former owners of the News-Journal. The glitzy art complex, conceived by Tippen Davidson, the newspaper's chief executive, triggered a legal battle with Cox Newspapers, the newspaper's minority shareholder. Cox sued the Davidsons for corporate waste, eventually succeeding in ending the newspaper's subsidy of the complex and its main tenant, the Seaside Music Theater. As the lawsuit dragged on, Cox gained control of the newspaper, Tippen Davidson died, and Cox booted the rest of the family and their lawyer from the paper's management. The financially ruined arts center was transferred to Daytona State College for a token payment, and operates currently as the Mike Curb College of Music, Arts and Sciences. The Seaside troupe went out of business, and about 300 newspaper workers lost their jobs as Cox imposed austerity to boost profits.
