1 Independent American March-April 1968 Issue -- George Wallace Campaign
New Orleans Free Men Speak Inc. 1968 Vol. XIV, No. 2 Newspaper Good No Jacket Newspaper
8 pp. newsprint, folded twice, with vertical and horizontal creasing. Lightly yellowed, corners thumbed but still well-preserved overall. Dated April 30, 1968. This far-right newspaper devoted most of its April 30, 1968 issue to the presidential candidacy of George Wallace and the assassination of Martin Luther King. Lead article on front page is headlined: "Why is the Conservative Establishment Giving Wallace the Treatment?" The article blames conservatives for shunning Wallace because he was not a Republican and represented a challenge to GOP candidate Richard Nixon. Inside articles include "The King Assassination -- Who Paid for it?" by Ralph de Toledano, plus two articles by Sen. Strom Thurmond: "Riot Escalation" and "De-Escalation a Mistake." Paper also includes a reprint from the Manchester (N.H.) Union Leader: "The Real Truth about Martin Luther King." A useful primary resource for researching the ultraconservative mentality that felt threatened by the radicalism of the late 1960s. Several derogatory references to Stokely Carmichael and various black-power and student radical organizations of the 60s. De Toledano's article speculates that radicals sympathetic to Communist China and Cuba may have engineered King's death as a way of creating revolutionary unrest in black ghettoes.
