1 Tuthill,William R. (Bostrom, Donald, et al. Eds.) Speed on Sand: The History of Racing at the Birthplace of Speed, Ormond Beach, Florida
Ormond Beach, Florida Ormond Beach Historical Trust 2002 Revised Edition, 4th Printing Trade Paperback Near Fine  Limited Edition
208 pp. Nearly new, no markings, tight, bright, spine uncreased. This updated edition was revised and edited by four historians in Ormond Beach -- Donald Bostrom, Carolyn Jernigan, Gordon Kipp and Ellen Rabin. Glossy stiff wraps, with glossy pictorial cover of a painting of an early beach race; rear cover is a painting of the old Ormond Garage, destroyed by fire. This scarce volume presents the history of beach-based auto racing and motorcycle racing at Ormond Beach and neighboring Daytona Beach, from 1902 to 1957. Many b&w historical photos, statistics, etc. Beach racing, except for occasional historical observances, was phased out and transferred in 1958 to the newly built Daytona International Speedway. This book covers the era when car racing was still more a sport than an entertainment industry. It also traces the early years of NASCAR, founded in Daytona Beach in 1947 by William H.G. France. His sons and grandchildren continue to control most of the billion-dollar industry. The unusually wide beach with its hard-packed sand has partly disappeared through the erosion effects of multiple hurricanes in 2004.
