276 pp. Lighly read, slight rubbing on spine corners. Text clean. Spine uncreased. A 1983 edition of a pioneering lesbian romance first published in 1952. Basis for the Cate Blanchette film "Carol." In this edition, Patricia Highsmith disclosed she wrote the novel under the pen name Claire Morgan. She notes it was one of the first gay novels in the 1950s to have a happy, hopeful ending, and she received appreciative fan mail from thousands of gay women and men in American small towns. The action begins when a suburban blonde beauty enters a New York department store, shopping for a Christmas toy, and catches the eye of a young female clerk. Includes a 1983 afterword by Highsmith. This is the 3rd version of the novel published by NAIAD.
